Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, also named as Swatantryaveer Savarkar was a social reformer, fearless freedom fighter, writer, poet, dramatist, historian, philosopher and political leader. After the death of Veer Savarkar on February 26th 1966, his followers throughout the country came together with idea of building a Smarak which would reflect his ideas and withstanding thoughts. Thereafter, a memorial committee has been formed to establish the Veer Savarkar Rashtrya Smarak.

Swatantryaveer Savarkar Rashtrya Smarak was inaugurated in great style by the Vice President of India, Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma on May 28th 1989 (Veer Savarkars' Birth Anniversary). Shri. Sharad Pawar (Chief minister of Maharashtra) and His excellency, Shri K. Bramhanand Reddy (the Governor of Maharashtra) graced this historical occasion. Savarkar is one of the few leaders in the history, who can claim the distinction of their thoughts continuing to be relevant years after their time. Needless to say that the Veer Savarkar Rashtrya Smarak is sparing no deliberations in spreading Savarkar's thoughts.

Development of Veer Savarkar Rashtrya Smarak

Veer Savarkar Rashtrya Smarak attained its current shape through continuous efforts of innumerable persons and various institutions. But even before the Smarak came up, the followers had almost started working on propagating Savarkar's ideology. The Smarak usually conducts seminars, lectures and symposia on various matters of national and local interest. The topics range from national defense, India's  military history, the social re-engineering of the society, thoughts of Hindutva, economic transformation and its implications and so on. The organizers takes special care in giving full justice to the Veer Savarkar's intellect in the wide diaspora of subjects covered.

Veer Savarkar's Atmarpan Smruti Din is observed on Feb 26th each year where the CM and other major governing authorities assemble to oversee a series of events. It is a matter of pride for the Veer Savarkar Rashtrya Smarak that the eminent personalities from various sectors have delivered speeches at the Smarak.

Facilities at Veer Savarkar Rashtrya Smarak

The Veer Savarkar Rashtrya Smarak has a research and reference library, national museum of revolutionaries, military training centre, auditorium, physical and yogic training centre, book trust, mobile hospital and medical centre. It has the only museum in the state, which is exclusively dedicated to the armed revolutionaries of the freedom movement. This museum has a huge collection of original exhibits and pictures during the freedom struggle of 1857 to 1947. The major attraction is the same scale model of Cell no. 123, in which Savarkar was incarcerated. The model of Cellular Jail in the Andamans can be viewed here, which symbolizes the true suffering of our fearless freedom fighters at the British hands. Currently the Museum is undergoing up-gradation and shall be re-open soon.

This national memorial build in the memory of Veer Savarkar attracts a huge number of people in the evening who like to enjoy their time and have casual talk in good atmosphere. This memorial was constructed at an area of 6650 sq meters, with a 20,000 sq.ft complex wherein the life size statue of Veer Savarkar stands tall. There's a beautiful garden surrounding the statue with two amazing fountains giving the whole area a magnificent look. Under the plaza, a spacious open floor which can accommodate around 25000 people is made available for holding exhibitions, meetings, camps and workshops.

The Smarak conducts several activities in order to build a strong youth to serve our country. Militarization, Air rifle shooting, Hinduism, martial arts and other activities started and are continuing with great enthusiasm.
